Breakfast at my place

One of the scariest things about quitting sugar is breakfast. Breakfast was by far the biggest hurdle, mostly because we had grown accustomed to eating sugary things out of boxes.

If you’re looking to quit The Sugar Boxes, you need to transition slowly away from them when you have children.

Because they will fight you, because they are children and that’s what they do. They don’t like change.

Here’s a question I get asked often. What do you give the kids for breakfast? I’ll be sharing a lot more about the food we eat here in this family to give you some ideas about what might work for your family.

I have 3 children and they have very different tastes and desires. They all have different things for breakfast. Not all mornings are the same. Sometimes they wake up ravenous. Sometimes they aren’t.

The Children:

1. Homemade bread. I’ve been using this recipe in the bread machine but substituting half of the wheat flour with buckwheat flour.  When it’s fresh out of the bread machine, it’s absolutely delicious. Baking our own bread means we are not eating the vegetable oils and the sugar and the soy lurking in supermarket loaves. Let’s not forget to mention it’s much nicer.

2. Wheat biscuits. Vita Wheat or generic branded wheat biscuits have the least amount of sugar. Weet bix has a little more sugar but is still very low.

3. Weeties is lurking in my cupboard but the kids don’t seem to want it anymore. No sugar. A good choice if you are trying to transition.

4. Cornflakes. My local health food shop sells organic Cornflakes sweetened with rice malt syrup. Kids like this with milk. I chuck in a bit of cream for good measure.

5. Eggs. Scrambled. Fried – you name it we have it. We have “mush” here (not a very appetising word I know) which constitutes of some kind of vegetable or protein or both mixed in with scrambled egg. Zucchini and mushrooms fried in with egg is yummy, as is a bacon and egg “mush”. Alternatively if there are some leftover vegetables, I chuck that it in and throw in an egg or too for yummy “mush”! We eat a lot of eggs here, up to about 3 dozen eggs a week. Egg is one of the most nutrient dense food on the planet so get it into ya.

6. Crepes. On the weekend, when I have a little more time for faffing about in the kitchen we have these for breakfast. I make a big batch because they freeze well and make a delicious gluten free wrap without all the nasties. I make the batter the night before and let it sit in the fridge overnight so the buckwheat can soak . This aids it’s digestibility.

7. Good ol’ bacon and eggs always goes down well. We choose free range bacon.

8.  Oats. Again you want to try and prepare these babies the night before and let it soak to aid digestibility.

9. Omelette with lots of cheese and add anything your heart desires.

10. Leftovers. Best meal. Ever.

11. My 2 year old will eat pretty much whatever is given to her. She likes eggs, avocado slices, leftovers all with a side of sauerkraut. My daughter has digestive issues and I keep her away from grains.

12. Kids are loving my granola with yoghurt or swimming in some milk and cream.

13. Zucchini pancakes: handful of grated zucchini mixed with one egg and salt, cooked in butter like you would a pancake. YUM!

When the kids have yoghurt or milk in with their breakfast, I normally sneak in a probiotic and sneakily mix it in.

Me

In the morning I’ve been waking to a lovely nice hot double espresso with cream. Coffee is not bad for you! Enjoy your coffee if you like it. Avoid adding sugar. Avoid having it with gallons of skim milk. Always choose full cream or raw, or unhomogenised if you can get it. This keeps me going until mid morning or even lunchtime, at which time I will eat again. I usually tuck into leftovers or make some eggs. At the moment I’ve been enjoying smoked salmon rolls, filled with cream cheese and mooshed avocado with a side of kraut. I also am a big fan of my granola, served with a few banana slices, yoghurt and cream and some probiotics mushed in.

So tell me, what do you like for breakfast. Give me some yummy ideas and I’ll add it to the list.
